Singapore GP countdown

Round 15 of the 2010 Formula One World Championship takes the teams to Singapore for the season’s only night race. First held in 2008, the Singapore Grand Prix has been a resounding success with the 5.073km Marina Bay Circuit lit with 1500 light projectors to illuminate the track and facilitate the 20:00 race start time.

Both championships are wide open, and realistically the current top five drivers are the ones in for the battle – Webber (187), Hamilton (182), Alonso (166), Button (165) and Vettel (163).

Pole, victory and fastest lap. The story of Monza was all about Fernando Alonso, who declared after the race: Veni, vidi, vici! Lewis Hamilton had only himself to blame as he retired on lap 1 after contact with Felipe Massa. After his bad luck in Belgium, Jenson Button led for most of the Italian GP, but had to settle for 2nd. But he brought himself back into the title race. Aware that Monza would not suit his RB6, Sebastian Vettel had a quiet race and finished P4. Mark Webber may only have finished a modest 6th, but he ends the European season as championship leader.

Singapore may enjoy seven times world champion Michael Schumacher; however in a Mercedes far from what is needed to battle for the win. In tandem Schumacher has never before raced on this track. Another German who is actually back at Marina Bay, Nick Heidfeld,  has just replaced Sauber Motorsports Spanish driver Pedro de la Rosa.

On the Constructors side basically only three teams have an honest chance of winning the championship – Red Bull Racing (350), Vodafone McLaren Mercedes (347) and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro (290). But!!! Of course the race isn’t over before they cross the finish line.

Ahead of the 2010 Formula One Singtel Singapore Grand Prix the city certainly isn’t sleeping – in fact it never is, but once again music and entertainment has its focus. See these previous articles from Singapore: Singapore Revs Up The Race Weekend and Michelin Chef announced.
